Long Term Projects

Student Refugee Program: WUSC sponsors a student from a refugee camp to come an attend post-secondary at the UofA.

Fair Trade: WUSC hands out free fair trade hot chocolate, tea, and coffee in Business Atrium every second week starting on Monday, Sept 27 to raise awareness about the importance of fair trade and where to purchase these products on campus.

Tri-Campus Socials: WUSC is active on three campuses in Edmonton: Grant MacEwan, Faculty St. Jean and University of Alberta. These socials are themed events to learn and create friendships between members of all three campuses.

International Seminar: This year’s seminar will be held in Vietnam on Youth and Socio-Economic Development. One of our Local Committee students, 20 Students from Canada, and 20 students from Vietnam will participate in a summer research project. Applications due in November.

Student Without Borders: 3, 6, or 9 month placements doing development work. To check out the types of placements go to www.wusc.ca/swb

September: End Poverty and Hunger

Stand Against Poverty (Sept 17): WUSC will be a part of three activities during Stand Against Poverty:

  • Tabling and advertise our group at the STAND event
  • Giving a workshop on MDG #2: Universal Education

WUSC Outdoor Bakesale (Sept 24): An Outdoor Bakesale to raise funds for the settling cost of the SRP sponsored student.

 

October: Environmental Sustainability

Regional WUSC Conference (Oct. 1-3): Held in Saskatoon this year, our regional conference is a great way to network between WUSC executives from Western Canada.

WUSC Movie Night (Oct. 20): To create a discussion about global sustainability issues, WUSC will host a movie night during Sustainability Awareness Week (SAW).

 

November: Child Health/Maternal Health

SRP Open House (Nov. 18): WUSC holds an open house for profs/administrators to learn more about our Student Refugee Program.  

Her Challenge: Your Challenge (Nov. 25): To celebrate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, WUSC will host a concert and silent auction to fundraise for Uniterra’s: Her Challenge, Your Challenge, a project supporting women’s empowerment in Ghana, Bolivia, and elsewhere through this Uniterra programme.  Event details can be found at http://www.facebook.com/julia.frohlich#!/event.php?eid=159359620763687

 

January: Gender Equality

Her Challenge (January): WUSC is hosting a lecture about what role you play in creating gender equality and what gender equality looks like around the world.

 

February: Universal Education

International Week (February): WUSC will facilitate a discussion about Universal Education and another on International Development.

SRP Gala (Feb. 25): A fundraiser to raise money for settling costs for the SRP program.

 

March: Combat HIV/AIDS

Bike for Aids (March 25): To raise money for bike ambulances in Malawi, WUSC invites students to collect pledges and have their bodies waxed in support of the cause.
