The Student Refugee Program Open House on November 18 gave students at the University of Alberta the opportunity to meet Akol, the student they helped sponsor this year. Among the students that came to meet Akol were the Vice President Operations & Finance and the Vice President Academic of the Students’ Union.
We received a great deal of support from students, and for that we are thankful. Without the help of students at the UofA, we would not be able to sustain this program.
Quir is the latest student refugee to come to the U of A as part of the program. After arriving in Canada this past August, the 20-year-old is now studying for a Bachelor of Science degree.
“It is great that I’ve finally made it to Canada. It is a long process, and a long dream that you wait for a very long time,” Quir said. “It finally comes out of hard work and determination.”
While Quir joked that he sometimes feels like he’s going to freeze when he walks to class from International House, he’s dealt with tougher circumstances. When he was young, southern Sudan was in a state of chaos.
“Our village was attacked when I was about two-and-a-half years old. So I fled with my parents — and I didn’t know what was happening, but I could see dead people all around, houses were burning beyond recognition. So we fled,” Quir said.

Halloween night WUSC joined forces with Make Poverty History and Engineers Without Borders for Reverse Trick or Treat, distributing Fair Trade chocolate door-to-door! A big thanks to everyone that went and represented WUSC at this event. Another big thanks to Sheetal and Akol for presenting at the Red Cross’ Even Wars Have Limits speaker night on Thursday last week!
Reminder that we have our general meeting on Wednesday, October 20 at 6pm in Humanities 115. If you would like to make it but can’t, or have any questions about the meeting, email firstname.lastname@example.org
